Poligamy Does Not = Perversion - Expand Your Mind on the Subject

– The Truth About Polygamy and the Mormons -

Most Americans equate polygamy with sexual perversion. While I have no desire to practice it myself, for truth's sake, I would clarify that it is separate from incest and child molestation. There is no historical correlation.

The Bible mentions polygamy more than a dozen times and does not condemn it a single time. We could think that this is simply an oversight by the Bible writers & translators or even a one-time allowance by god if it were only mentioned once or twice without being condemned. The truth is that it was standard practice by God's mouthpieces. It was part of God's program.

For perspective, imagine you were one of King Solomon's 100's of children. You would have grown up with the view that polygamy was something practiced only by the most honorable people of integrity like your Dad.

Each marriage is a standalone covenant of fidelity between one man and one woman not to have sex with anyone but to whom they are legally and lawfully married. Each covenant, regardless of the number of wives, is regarded with the highest fidelity. These marriages are forever, unlike the 10-year mindset of our newest "monogamous" generation.

Consider how hypocritical current accusations against polygamists are. The average woman today will probably have sex with a dozen men in their lifetime, and that's if they're not too promiscuous, having only one relationship every two years, starting no earlier than 16 years of age and then only being married a few times. Compare that to polygamists who are virgins when they get married and never divorce or get remarried (only 10% divorce rate).

Colorado City polygamists, from whom the sexual perversion media myth about polygamy originates, are not fundamental Mormons. They have simple sexual desires and a perverted lifestyle (no integrity) and have stolen the Mormon name. They are, if anything, the children of disgruntled X-members.

To follow the “fundamentals” of Mormonism, or more properly, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, one would have to follow the clearly defined pattern of Church governance and succession established by its founder, Joseph Smith, before his death. He taught the members to always follow the majority of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and that it would never lead them astray. This Quorum (majority of Apostles) has remained ever since, even though a substantial minority left the Church and Joseph’s first wife Emma went with them. Thus, there are no orthodox or fundamental Mormons. One either sticks with it or leaves it; there are no branches. If one follows this most “fundamental” doctrine of the faith from its inception, then one will not currently practice polygamy because the twelve have declared it a sin to practice it.

Only 19th century Protestants were anti-polygamy enough to cause the hate and suspicion that existed against Mormon’s. If it had occurred in any other time or place in the history of the world, they would have likely been left alone and not had anti-polygamy laws written just for them.

If you’ve ever watched Oprah, you may have noticed the difference between polygamists. If you’re like me, you watched a polygamist family for the first time, on TV in the 80’s, what was shocking was that they actually seemed normal and the wife’s happy. I do not believe personally, that they can be enjoying ALL of God’s blessings without God specifically commanding them to practice it, which HE surely did not. However, what can be detected is that polygamy is not inherently evil. God has used it from time to time for his purposes; the key is ONLY WHEN HE COMMANDS IT.

Polygamy was never fun for the men in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They did not seek it and it was only practiced by a small 3% minority in the Church. It was a calling that they always mourned after receiving because they knew its difficulty level. Sinning outside the covenant of marriage fulfills selfish sexual desires without all of the work that these men committed to for the rest of their lives. It was not easy and they knew it. Any selfish advantages were dwarfed by the lifetime commitments and responsibilities. Like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David & Solomon, the reason for it was probably to spread the positive influence of a few righteous Church leaders as far as possible so that the Church would grow faster and have strong leadership. This was exactly the effect it appears to have had.

Sincerely,
Jason
